Victory Oaks - A New Woodland In Portsmouth?

Windsor Royal Parks, The Woodland Trust and HMS Victory have joined forces in a truly inspirational celebration of trees and wooden ships.

The Victory Oaks project is special. 200 oak saplings have been offered free of charge to Portsmouth Schools from the Queen's own plantations in Windsor Great Park, from which wood for Britain's wooden warships was taken.

Wherever possible, it is hoped that the trees will be planted in the grounds of  each school.  Those schools not able to accommodate an oak tree will be invited to plant in Victory Wood, one of the 27 woods named after the Trafalgar ships to be planted by the Woodland Trust as part of their Trafalgar Woods project.  Plans are afoot to find a site in Portsmouth

The project will be supported by a poster, explaining how native wood was used in the Georgian Navy and giving ideas for lessons linked to Citizenship, Literacy and ICT.

Plantings will take place from October to December 2005.  Portsmouth Schools must sign up to the project before the spring half term holiday 2005.

This is once in a lifetime learning experience - don't miss out!
